Windies looking to improve on all-round performance – Kieron Pollard

Despite coming out on top of a roller coaster contest in the first T20I against Sri Lanka in Antigua and Barbuda on Wednesday night, West Indies will be looking to improve on their allround performance according to skipper Kieron Pollard.

Speaking at a virtual press conference on Thursday, Pollard pointed out; “ Each and every time you step on the cricket field, you want to improve. From a fielding perspective we were minus in the field, we wanna get that into the positive”.

A point of concern for the Windies would be the collapses they had on Wednesday before Jason Holder guided them home safely. On this note Pollard maintained; “From a batting perspective, not losing wickets in clusters, we will try to find a way to use our batsmen to negate the spin of Sri Lanka. That is going to be a challenge, it is a conversation we continue to have and hopefully we can come up with the right methods in terms of combating that”.

The new look bowling unit which consists of youngsters Kevin Sinclair, Obed McCoy, veteran returnee Fidel Edwards and Holder came in for high praise from the skipper.

“I thought they were fantastic even though it was a new bowling line up, I don’t think it had any bowler from the last series there, they used their skill, they used the wicket, they used their brains and were able to shut out Sri Lanka for 130 odd. It could only be positive from there, we still look for areas to improve and it’s a matter of just trying to execute, let’s see how far, how long they can take us”.

Pollard joined illustrious company during that memorable game on Wednesday when he became only the third man to hit six sixes in an over in international cricket. The two others to do it were South Africa’s Herschelle Gibbs and India’s Yuvraj Singh.

The West Indies head into today’s game with a 1-0 lead and will be looking to clinch the three match series. Game time is 6PM Eastern Caribbean Time (5 PM Jamaica).
